Charlie's Hospital Visit

We had a little scare on Sunday. Both Jobe and Charlie have been sick with a virus and Jobe had a 104 fever a few nights ago. Charlie's hasn't been that bad, but when he jumped down off the bunk bed to clean up as I asked him to he bashed his elbow against the ladder. Of course this had to be painful, but in the corner of my eye I saw him hamming it up and walk across the room a little bit.

What happened next was a little blurry, but I heard a crash and saw Charlie slam against the book case and slide down to the ground. I thought, "wow, he's really putting on a show!"

As I came close to see if he hurt himself in the drama, I noticed his eyes go cross-eyed, and he didn't respond to me when I asked him if he was okay, the first thing I thought of was that he was having a seizure.

I carried him to the couch and yelled for Melia to call 911 at which point he came to.

Still unsure whether he was playing around or not, I preceded to scold him for scaring us like that (of course, the night of Pip's passing was flashing through our heads).

I decided to take him to the hospital although the whole time I kept letting him know how important it is that we know what happened, and if he decided to remember anything it would be best to do so now (still unsure if he had been acting and too afraid to not tell the truth)

By the time I got to the hospital, I was convinced that it really happened and as he was going in for a chest x-ray, he collapsed right in front of the nurse. Later back in the bed, I asked him if he remembered passing out in the x-ray room and he didn't.

The doctor decided to run the full gamit of tests (blood count, strep tests, CAT scan, IV, etc) to make sure everything was okay. Everything checked out except for his white blood cell count which was too low, but that checked out because he was sick with a virus.

Poor kid had an IV stuck in him too just to make sure he was hydrated and we told him that if he didn't pee in the cup, they would have to do a catheder and that it hurt a lot worse than the IV. Boy, I think he popped a vein trying to push something out : )

In the end, the doctor felt it was a febrial seizure which is caused by spikes in fevers in children up to age 6. The doctor felt that since Charlie just turned 6 and that his fever wasn't that high, he probably only exhibited a few symptoms of the seizure instead of the whole shaking thing.

As I thought about it, he did something similar a while back and I just thought he was acting....hopefully, we won't have to worry about it again, since it isn't supposed to be exhibited in children over six.
